It's a miracle! Stingers renamed and still live

Mississippi 'Miracles' operating under new local ownership

(Greenville, MS) - The Delta's ABA franchise is back in business with a new name and local ownership.

The former Mississippi Stingers are now known as the Mississippi Miracles and will play home games on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Atlanta Vision at the Washington Convention Center.

The new majority owner is local physician Ronald Myers, Sr. Investors include Greenville mayor Heather Hudson, Dr. Arthur Peyton, local dentist D. J. Berak, and Greenville-Weston head football coach Mario Kirksey.

"We want the public to know of our revitalization and our local ownership," Myers said. "I'm very familiar with the Green Bay Packers' model. We're planning a public stock sale."

The new ownership group was forced to change the team's nickname. The previous owners threatened to file suit if the nickname 'Stingers' was retained. The team went 1-1 on a recent road trip but did not publicize the trip for fear of possible retaliation through the courts.

Assistant coach James Smith said the franchise got an assist from ABA commissioner Joe Newman with its new name.

"I told him it's been a miracle we've been able to do what we're doing," Smith said. "So Joe said, 'Why don't you go with Miracles.'"

The Miracles' logo will feature a basketball with wings and a halo.

Head coach Sam Lacey said he expects the Miracles to have eight to nine players for the upcoming homestand.

"It's not a problem picking up players, it's having them fit into our system," Lacey said.

The Miracles are working with the league and the WCCC on scheduling more home dates. The team may possibly serve as a substitute opponent for ABA clubs in playoff contention.

Myers indicated the organization's goal is to finish the current season and prepare for the ABA season this fall.
